Creative Nudge 5

Keep a diary for a week. I wrote mainly in Finnish, there are couple of sentences in English too when I got distracted by something on TV. This nudge got me thinking to start a diary. Might be too Bridget Jones though. I have already two Dr. Phil books and couple of exercise DVDs  in my bookcase, so keeping a diary.. WAY too Bridget. Even for me. Anyhoo, here’s the next nudge. I decided to quote Hub Bub to explain:

The Creative Revelutionaries, Nudge #6 & #7

Nudge 6 is The 5 Minute Collage. This idea came from a friend a long time ago (thank you Robin). It is simple and a great starter exercise.

What you’ll need:
A timer
An old magazine

Glue Stick

Set your timer for 5 minutes. Take the old magazine and rip through it. Tear out pages that speak to you, working intuitively for about a minute and make a nice pile – 12-15 sheets. Now winnow down the 12-15 torn out pages. Look quickly at each page: what speaks to you? Glue ‘em down. The idea is to work quickly to outpace the critic. Don’t think. Tear and glue. Badaboom. Done.
Since I’ll be in beautiful Washington State and computer-FREE next week, I’ll give you nudge #7 right now, if you are game! You’ll need gesso or white paint and a pencil. Paint loosely over your 5 minute collage with the paint and draw or write into the wet paint with your pencil.

This one is the hardest so far. Outpacing my inner critic? Yeah, not  really a talent of mine…

Creative Nudge 3&4 and some pattern issues

Nudge 3 was: Stick Your Photos Down! I printed the pictures I took on sticker paper.

Nudge 4: Lettering! This one I did twice. The first I used kids felt tip pens and did decorative song titles but in the end it looked bit too much like my biology note book ca.1995. I know, I know, self-editing is bad for your creativity but I just couldn’t handle the look. I don’t know if this is any better but at least I got some idea’s to work with later…

Letter N. It rocks.

Okay, then to my pattern issue…About an year ago I splurged and bought three patterns from Vogue Patterns.; Anna Sui, Vogue Vintage and a Michael Kors. Now I have hard time deciding which one to do first. I’m more than happy to take suggestions:

Since spring is the season of layering I’m gearing towards the Anna Sui one. Hmm. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Creative Nudge- progress…

My weekend wasn’t all pity party and boozing. I managed to take pictures and thus finished the creative nudge 2. Now I’m unto number 3, which is…Use your photos! I have to print some of the pictures and stick them into my sketchbook. I think I’ll manage that.

The first image is a corridor in the building where I do Pilates. The second shot I took on my way from said class and the last was taken at my sister’s. I have about 70 equally interesting (?) pictures to choose from plus a printer which refuses to print black. This is going to be fun…

Till next time.

P.S. I had to go and have a peek what the next nudge is. It’s lettering! Which means a Font Fest! Yay!

Creative Nudge 1: Done!

Didn’t think I’d get it done so soon but here’s the first nudge finished! The theme was a paper/fabric collage. I haven’t done any inspiration art for ages, so the result is nothing spectacular. Main thing though is that I did it, I got creative and I have something to show for it.

Materials used: washi tape, old magazine, wrapping paper, lace, purple ink, fabric tape, oil crayon, failed print of my Valentine’s Day Subway Art and plenty of glue. When making this, I noticed that I need something sensible to collect my various scraps in. For paper, a shoe box will suffice but for tiny fabric pieces, I’m thinking of getting an old style glass flour container. Or maybe a few smaller ones to sort the scraps by colour. Either way, I could kill two birds with a one stone; it would be practical AND visually interesting.

Speaking of visually interesting…The next nudge is: Photography! The task is to take my camera with me for one day and take pictures of everything possible. To make most of this, I’m doing this on Tuesday as I’m going to Helsinki then and there’s a lot more photo-ops. Me thinks. Or is that cheating if I plan like this? But then again, when I’m in Espoo, my routine is pretty established  so I don’t think it’s inspiring enough for me. On the other hand, maybe that’s the purpose. To look my “normal” a new way. Hmm, something for me to think about. To end this post, here’s a collage my 9-year-old cousin made together with her mom, using my fabric tapes and fabric scraps. Happy, happy, happy Anyday to you!
