Wow. This week I have found tons of new people to follow on Pinterest and subsequently, tons of pretty, inspiring things. Even with all the hullabaloo surrounding Sew Mama Sew’s Giveaway, I found some time to pin:

very french gangsters very bombe paris

I don’t know what the story is about but she sure as heck does look cute. I need to pinch those  cheeks and ruffle that hair and maybe try on those glasses. I’m pretty sure I’d look equally cute.

floral skirt with grey gingham shirt

Okay. If I can’t rock the cute maybe I could do the classy. I love the autumnal tones of the skirt against the lightweight summer tones in the blouse. I’m half tempted to pull down my curtains to make that skirt.

Helena Bonham Carter I couldn’t find the original source :( But I love this quote.

Can you ever get enough of vintage florals? This wallpaper is something I’d be happy to have in  fabric as well. I could do an entire room with it, walls, drapes, sofa…You name it. And a dress. It would be like a crazy cat lady camouflage. Maybe I could trademark it or something?

The dog would say no.

Weekly Photo Challenge: A Day in My Life

Oh, how I wish this challenge had come up in couple of months time. But alas, it’s on now, so I don’t have anything super cool to share. However, you will get a brief glimpse of how I’ve occupied myself during my prison sentence/sick leave (can you sense how the walls are caving in?).

So, my morning ritual takes a while. You know, deciding if today is really worth putting clothes on. So far, on most days, I’ve managed to convince myself that the effort is worth the result.

Then I usually log on FB, check if I’ve sold anything, see my blog stats and then e-mail. Still nothing exciting. But when these onlining things are done, my more interesting life begins. First, I go through my sellable items and see what are most likely to sell. Sometimes there are Wild West Sales in the group I frequent and then you don’t have to take individual photos but can gather them like this:

Paasiaisvillis1 How convenient. On WW-sale you don’t have to price them either. People can bid on them whatever they wish and  you don’t have to sell if you think the price is too low. However, sometimes people want to see close ups:

Punaliina2 This one is either by Tampella or Finlayson and already sold. It’s in mint condition and I sold it in quite a low price. Why? Because it’s been in my sewing stash for couple of years already and I wanted to get rid of it. Good quality item but did nothing for me so it could go.

After I’ve done with the Totally Going To Sell-things, I usually switch on the What Else Could I Get Rid Off-mode. I’m currently redoing my wardrobe (because the Future Is Open And Must Get Serious About Careers And Stuff-thing) so I’m going through all my clothes and eyeing them critically. As in: Would They Hire Me In This? One particular item is giving me a headache. It’s definitely not a professional (unless you work on Rue St. Denis in Paris) BUT it’s pretty and I love the colour AND I do need going out clothes too. But the big BUT is that it’s began to fray:

AsosScallop1 The dress has a scalloped hem and there is a fray there too. Any suggestions on how to mend this would be greatly welcome. Anyhoo, back to my day. Sometimes I need to be adult and call places (doctors, insurance companies etc.) which usually end up me either in tears or mad steaming. Both and/or in that order. Then I need something calming so I eat some chocolate. If that’s not enough, I might do some crafting:

Valentinefebruary Yeah, yeah. It’s beautiful, I know. Incidentally, guess how many Valentines I managed to send? :D Am I predictable or what?

Now, you may have gotten the impression that I’m always home. And that’s totally not true. Sometimes I get invited to parties where I go as far as having fun. Last party was in January. It was my sister’s birthday where I almost didn’t go because I didn’t want to risk anything happening to my knee before the operation. I’m glad that I did go because I got some fun photos (that I may or may not use for blackmailing sometime in the future) and I got to drink some Ron Ron Juice. Yes, my sister hosted a Jersey Shore-party. Here’s my cousin pouring herself some of the said drink:

RonRonJuice Beware: It gives you a killer hangover. The kind that gets you wishing you were dead the next morning. Fun times!

So this is the life of Thrifty Finn. If you are interested, click HERE to see other interpretations of the theme.

P.S. Funny story. My sister, totally getting on in the theme, did an entire Jersey Shore-makeover on herself. Trashy clothing, weaves, nail extensions. The works. Of course, piece de la resistance was to be her fake tan. She, never having done this before, did the tanning thing with a self-tanning lotion. She added some and when she didn’t see immediate results, added some (a lot) more. I swear to gods, she kept changing colour in my eyes. It was a lightish orange-brown when I arrived at the party and by the time we got to the bar, her tint was bordering purple. A la Cristian Ronaldo. Like I said. Fun times.

Retail Therapy For So Many Reasons

Hi all! Remember when I said my operation would be on 15th? Does it seem like I’m at the hospital right now? No sir, it doesn’t…

On my pre-operation check-up on 5th, after meeting the anesthesia doctor and nurse, I walked into the surgeon’s office. We exchanged some polite words and then he said: “I’ve been summoned to testify in court. Guess which date?”

My eyes did this:

And I was quiet for a very, VERY long time. The quietness lasted so long that it went from normal pause to awkward to “there’s going to be some serious butt-whooping going on if something doesn’t get done right”. I got re-scheduled to 5th of February. Which is cool because that’s when the killer winter temperatures usually kick in and you couldn’t drag me out of this flat with wild horses when it’s -30c. (Except when I need chocolate. Ooh, the things I have done for chocolate).

I was feeling depressed for a week about this because I’d been mentally preparing myself for the 15th and had made plans accordingly. When I got out of my funk, I began getting things ready for the 5th. First order of business was getting some safe shoes to walk in and outdoors. And that of course meant getting:

The HORROR! Doom! There’s no recovering from this! I had to get Crocs. CROCS! My friend said on Facebook that I should be whipped and not in a 50 Shades of Grey kind of way.

But they are comfortable. Perfect for my recovery period. Then it will already be spring and I will be able to walk in other, non-Crocs shoes. But boy, are these comfortable. I’ve been wearing the outdoor shoes indoors for over an hour now. I paid 90 euros for two pairs of shoes which is a total bargain compared to the other safe and comfy shoes I had my eyes on. They were 200 euros a pair. See, I managed to live up to my bloggy name!

Anyhoo, since my shoe shopping was so traumatizing, I decided to smooth my bruised design ego by getting some crafty supplies. Craft Gossip recently linked to a fabulous digital scrapbooking store called Pixels and Company. They have these fantastic 1$ sales AND freebies so I decided to have a look. For 3$/2.25€ I got three fabulous paper sets and then I got three freebies too! Check these babies out:

pixandco1 So pretty. 3 different designers with their own distinctive style. I’m especially keen on the plaid on Scarlett, autumn hues on Autumn Delight and those watercolour florals on In Bloom. All this for 3$! Then from the freebies section I chose:

pixandco2 Those date caps are awesome. I just saw in some crafty blog a picture from CHA where some company had bottle cap embellishments in their line. The Daydream set I got because of the houndstooth and Reindeer Games…See that interesting herringbone-style pattern with the yellow snowflakes next to it? So nice and design-y.

So this is what I’ve been up to. How’s your week been?

Frida Marina

Just before Christmas I visited a brand new (well, couple of months old) vintage store/boutique in Helsinki. Its owner is my sister’s old colleague and the store has been her dream for like forever. Located in the hip and happening neighbourhood of Kallio (trams 3B/T and 9), it’s not too much out of one’s way because there are plenty of flea markets and thrift stores in the area so you can basically make a day of it. What’s different about Frida Marina, is that everything is well thought of and presented.

I like that when you step in, you are not immediately crowded by stuff. I like to be able to see the merchandise and then make the beeline if I see something I like. Items are loosely sorted by style and/or colour.

There’s not just clothing and shoes for sale but other vintage goodies too. I found a curtain (which I sold) and an apron, both for the cheap! Oh, did I mention the reasonable pricing? I also eyed the Finel-bowl but since I’m not a collector, 40 euros was too much. But if I was a collector, that would be cheap. Frida Marina is also a coffee shop, so you can take a break amidst your shopping, drink tea and read Vogue.

And what was the thing that I coveted the most?

FridaMarinaDetalji3It was this dress with this fabulous print, by Anna Sui. Only 60 euros!!! I’ve lost weight but I’m still long way off from wearing designer size S. Waaaaaaah!

Anyhoo, despite like looking like a consignment store, Frida Marina functions more like those traditional flea markets where you rent a booth. A week costs 40 euros, a month 140. The difference is that Tuuli-Maria organizes everything for you and keeps everything well presented. When your time is up, she even takes down all your unsold wares. Handy! If I had a larger stock of vintage, I’d probably sell them at Frida Marina. If you’re interested to visit, here’s the LINK to their Facebook-page where you can find the contact details.

Funny story: when I walked in the store, I saw couple of clients and thought they looked awfully like my cousins.

FridaMarinaSerkut They were. And I’m an idiot.

Over and out.
